Many modern people have problems with their teeth, so when they are removed, there is a need for a crown that would replace their healthy teeth. Today, there is an opportunity to put a crown of any material, for any period and at an affordable price. In our article, we will talk about the types of crowns for the front and chewing teeth, and also find out which ones are better and why.

Types of crowns for chewing teeth

Chewing teeth perform an important function - they grind the food that we eat. Therefore, when one (or more) teeth are lost, there is a need for a good quality crown that can withstand daily stress and not cause discomfort to its owner. Consider the types of crowns for chewing teeth and their main advantages:

  • Metal . These crowns come in silver and gold shades. Their advantages include a long service life (10-12 years) and structural strength. When choosing these crowns, the tooth is turned less, so this process is painless and short.
  • Metal-ceramic . Their distinctive feature is the ceramic surface on the outside and the metal inside. They have a similar color to the teeth and have the same advantages as metal crowns.
  • Ceramic (without metal). Such crowns are made of zirconium dioxide or porcelain, they are no different from other teeth, and besides, they are quite strong and durable (service life of 9 years).
  • Combined . This type of crown combines various materials: metal, zirconium/porcelain, and ceramics. When making a crown, the client himself chooses what its surface should be, which material to use more and which less, etc.

When choosing crowns, it is not necessary to focus only on their beautiful appearance. Be sure to consult your dentist on this issue, perhaps he will give you some recommendations and help you make the right choice, taking into account the condition of your teeth and health in general.

About the types of crowns for chewing teeth:

Types of crowns for front teeth

The front teeth do not take any part in the chewing process, but they are clearly visible when a person's mouth is open, so the appearance of the crowns should not differ from the rest of the teeth. Crowns on the front teeth are of the following types:

  • Metal-ceramic . This type of crown is the most popular. They are distinguished by an acceptable price and aesthetics (with high-quality manufacturing), and also have a long service life (from 8 years). The disadvantages of these crowns include the need for root canal filling and heavy grinding of the teeth, which is time consuming and requires a high degree of professionalism from the dentist.
  • metal-free. Such crowns have several subspecies, differing in the material from which they are made. They have an aesthetic appearance, besides they are quite strong and durable. Consider 2 subspecies metal-free crowns:
    • Porcelain . Only single crowns are placed from this material, therefore it will not work to make a bridge of 2 or more crowns, they will have to be placed separately. Crowns of this type are made according to 2 technologies: a porcelain mass is applied in layers or a porcelain sheet is pressed under pressure and high temperature. Pressed material is much stronger and more reliable, so before placing a crown, find out what technology it was made using. Porcelain crowns are highly aesthetic and retain their qualities for a long time.
    • Zirconium dioxide . This material is the most modern, so its reliability and durability is at the highest level. Such crowns have 2 layers: inside they are made of zirconium dioxide, and outside - from porcelain mass. These crowns are easily and quickly placed, do not darken and do not let water, food and other substances through due to their tight fit to the gums.

Metal-free crowns have only 1 drawback - high cost. However, the price for the products corresponds to the quality, therefore, having put these crowns on yourself, you can not worry about the aesthetics and impeccability of your smile.

When choosing a crown, you must be guided by common sense, and not by the desire to save money or brag to family, friends or colleagues. Do not forget to check with your dentist for the best option for crowns that could suit you. Also, ask your doctor to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and fit for crowns. If the dentist does not notice any problem (inflammation of the tooth root, the remaining nerve, slight bleeding, etc.), then after a certain time it will begin to develop, the gums and teeth will begin to hurt, and the crown will have to be removed to get rid of this or that disease. Only with the complete elimination of the problem and recovery will it be possible to put the crown back.

During pregnancy, my teeth began to crumble. Since I did not deal with this problem in time, I had to put crowns on 3 chewing teeth. I chose metal because they were the cheapest and most durable. But after a while, an unpleasant taste and smell appeared in my mouth. I again turned to the dentist, and he advised me to change the crowns to metal ceramics. Replaced, I have been using them for several years, the unpleasant aftertaste has disappeared.
