Modern dentistry today offers many options for prosthetics, the most popular of which is the installation of ceramic crowns. A distinctive feature of this type of crowns from others is the complete absence of any metal structures, which ensures the naturalness and natural appearance of the teeth. Today we will tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of porcelain and zirconium crowns.

The whole variety of ceramic crowns can be divided into several types, each of which depends on the material used in their manufacture.

Porcelain crowns

The manufacturing process is carried out on the basis of porcelain, the main method of obtaining which is the injection molding method. Its peculiarity lies in the production at elevated temperature and strong pressure. Obtaining ceramics in this way ensures its super strength and high quality even in the absence of a metal frame. Porcelain has a close resemblance to the natural structure of the teeth, which makes it possible to bring the produced crowns closer to the natural dentition.

Disadvantages of porcelain crowns

The main disadvantage of such prosthetics is the high cost of crowns made of this material, as well as the fact that porcelain is suitable for installing only single crowns, since the lack of a framework makes it impossible to use it for the manufacture of bridges.

Benefits of porcelain crowns

Among the advantages of porcelain crowns is their close resemblance to natural tooth enamel, which makes it possible to choose the desired shade of the crown. Porcelain crown has a long period of operation due to the high quality of this material, over time it does not darken and appear yellowish, and the original luster is preserved.

Zirconia crowns

To date, zirconium is the most high-quality material in the manufacture of crowns. Unlike other materials, zirconia is used both for the manufacture of single crowns and for the manufacture of bridges.

The manufacturing technology of a zirconium crown is the construction of a strong framework with the gradual application of a certain layer of porcelain mass. This design is inferior in strength to metal-ceramic , however, this disadvantage is compensated by the high light transmission of metal-free ceramics.

Benefits of zirconia crowns

The main advantages of zirconium crowns are:

  • prosthetics in the oral cavity makes the process of using crowns absolutely invisible, since the main property of this type of crowns is the ability to convey the shade of natural teeth;
  • zirconium crowns are made on the basis of modern technological advances, which makes it possible to ensure an accurate fit of crowns on the teeth, as well as to prevent the development of the inflammatory process;
  • high aesthetic properties are preserved for a long time, because the design does not change its color and luster at all;
  • high structural strength is achieved by using zirconium dioxide in the manufacture of the frame.

Disadvantages of zirconia crowns

The disadvantages of using zirconium crowns are that the use of modern equipment and expensive materials causes a high cost of this type of service, and when installing such crowns, it becomes necessary to deep grind the hard tissues of the tooth, which is a complex procedure.
